GROOMING SERVICES
WHAT TO EXPECT
During regular grooming sessions, birds are completely awake for all services.
GROOMING FACTS
Usually, two people will do the groom. One holds the bird safely and monitors health and stress levels. The other does the grooming.
Birds are toweled gently, and we try to be quick about the entirety of the visit.
We use a Dremel on both beaks and nails, and sometimes will use small clippers on nails (but never beaks).
We always err towards longer rather than shorter. We can always take more off, but an ouchy beak and nails aren’t fun for bird, human OR groomer.
In the event we quick a bird and cause bleeding (it’s not terribly uncommon) we use Stop Quick to stop the bleeding.
If we feel your bird is stressed or is being adversely affected by grooming in any way, we reserve the right to stop and recommend you to a veterinarian. Our objective is never to harm an animal, and to always follow their lead for what they can handle.
We do not clip wings here at the rescue. 1) We don’t do it for the birds in the rescue and 2) For lack of practice, we’re not good at it. So we’ll leave that to our betters and recommend for wing clipping you see a licensed veterinarian who is familiar with birds.
WHAT KIND OF GROOMING IS BEST FOR YOUR BIRD?
CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR BIRD
If your bird gets stressed easy, grooming while your bird is awake is not a good idea. In the event your bird has serious special needs, or panics to the point of clicking or seizures, your bird should only be seen by a licensed veterinarian who can use a light ISO or a midazolam for super light sedation. We are not able to do that here at Birds and Beaks during regular scheduling.
We recommend you see Dr. Melissa McNally at Jolly Road Veterinary for grooming for birds that need sedation for their safety.
***We do host two low cost vet clinics per year, usually in late January/early February and again in July where Dr. Scott McDonald will do a full exam and grooming while your bird is sedated. Keep an eye on our social media accounts and our event’s calendar here on the website for scheduling for those.
